T-Mobile MDA Vario IV Mobile Phone Review

Category : Mobile Phones

One of the latest breed of connected mobile devices, the T-Mobile MDA Vario  IV is a compact mobile phone that looks at first glance like a PDA. Chunkier than a conventional mobile phone at 108 x 58 x 18.1mm and 165 grams, but smaller than other connected devices like the SPV M5000 (MDA Pro). But the coolest thing about the T-Mobile MDA Vario IV is that the whole front of the device slides to one side to reveal a full qwerty keyboard. As soon as the screen is slid over, the display switches to landscape mode with the 2.8 inch screen offering a resolution of 320 x 240 pixels. The keyboard itself is quite small but you soon get used to typing with it. One annoying trait is that due to compact area available for the keyboard all the keys have to double  up on functions and there are no dedicated number keys, so every time you want to type a digit you have to use function key. However even this foible ceases to be a problem once you become familiar with it.

largemdavario4

This compact size means that all edges of the T-Mobile MDA Vario IV have been used for controls. The left hand side has the volume controls along with a shortcode menu button. The top of the phone has the power switch, the right hand side houses the voice recorder button and on the bottom you have the mini USB port and a 2.5mm headphone socket. Up to 7 hours talking time and 367 hours on standby are available with the Li-ion  1340 mAh battery.

To make a call you simply tap the call button and a virtual phone keypad will appear, numbers can be entered using fingers or stylus. A quad band mobile device, the T-Mobile MDA Vario will work in most countries around the world. With 40Mb built-in and a further 512Mb storage available via 512Mb mini-SD card.

The biggest question for most people is whether they would be willing to use a connected device like the T-Mobile MDA Vario IV as their everyday phone. In a time where manufacturers are busily making mobile phones as small and slim as possible, using a larger device may not appeal to many. This means that for many, the T-Mobile MDA Vario IV would be an additional purchase on top of their everyday phone. if this is the case, it would obviously limit appeal.

In terms of internet connectivity, the Vario doesn’t perform quite as well as the SPV M5000 or XDA Exec (both of which are 3G phones). However, 3G enabled phones aside, internet browsing and email messaging are pretty good. The T-Mobile MDA Vario IV is fitted with a 3.2 megapixel camera offering autofocus, LED flash and digital zoom. Multimedia player supporting MP3, AAC, AAC+, WMA, WAV and Windows Media Player formats

Compare T-Mobile MDA Vario IV Deals

Pros
Almost does everything
Reasonably small considering features and competition

Cons
2.5mm headphone socket so can’t use many aftermarket headphones
No 3G interconnectivity
320 x 240 pixels screen resolution is less than comparable phones

The T-Mobile MDA Vario IV is a complete mobile device. It is just about small enough to use as an everyday phone, but most would like to see the size reduced further. 3G support would also definitely be an improvement.

Category : Mobile Phones, Sony Ericsson

The latest model in the excellent Sony Walkman mobile phone series is the funky Sony Ericsson W715 Silver (an upgraded version of the Sony W705). For music lovers this mobile phone should be high on the short list. If you take a lot of photo’s or video’s however, you may be disappointed. Sony Ericsson G705 Mobile Phone Review

Category : Mobile Phones, Sony Ericsson

The Sony Ericsson g705 is the second feature phone in the Sony Ericsson Generation Web range (in fact it’s only the second mobile phone from Sony Ericsson to feature both WLAN and GPS capabilities). The Sony Ericsson G705 handset is almost entirely made of plastic and measures just 95 x 47 x 14.3 mm and weighs only 98 grams. This is a neat and compact phone with a simple design. A 2.4″ QVGA display dominates the front view and above it you will find an ambient light sensor, earpiece and secondary video-call camera. Under the screen there is a round D-pad with two blocks of semicircle controls symmetrically placed on either side.

Sliding the phone upwards will reveal an alphanumeric raised and backlit keyboard that is easy to use with ridges between rows and clearly defined columns. Unlike some slide phones the top row of keys on the keypad has plenty of room and is unaffected by the slider. There is no The M2 memory card slot on the outside of the Sony Ericsson g705 as this is hidden underneath the battery cover.

The Sony Ericsson g705 is fitted with the standard Sony Ericsson BST-33 950 mAh Li-Po battery which should  provide up to 10 hours of talk time and up to 400 hours of standby.

A variation of the Sony Ericsson g705 handset, the G705u, is to be offered as the first UMA enabled Sony Ericsson phone ( UMA enables users to seamlessly roam between mobile networks and Wi-Fi LAN networks) The G705u will be exclusive to the Orange network.

The Sony Ericsson G705 has a flash-based Media Center, where you will find Music Player 3.0 and the Media Center menus. The media player supports all popular formats, such as MP3, AAC, AAC+, E-AAC +, WAV, WMA, M4A and MIDI. In addition the G705 has sound features like the famous Sony MegaBass equalizer preset and a facility called stereo widening (a complex signal processing procedure to give a fuller more “alive” sound).

Sony Ericsson F305 White Mobile Phone Review

Category : Mobile Phones, Sony Ericsson

Looking remarkable like a Wii controller, the Sony Ericsson F305 White is designed to bring mobile motion sensor based gaming to the mobile market. The handset comes equipped with a motion sensing camera, a selection of games and dedicated gaming keys. With dimensions of 96 x 47 x 14.6mm, the Sony Ericsson F305 White is slightly chunkier than it’s competitors, although it weighs just 97.5 grams.

largef305white
The screen is a bit of a disappointment for a gaming orientated phone, featuring just 176 x 220 pixel resolution. The dedicated gaming controls are better, with one to access games folder and two above the screen with dedicated game controlling functions. The keypad below the slide could be better, in normal use it performs OK but when trying to rush out a fast text message the keys lack definition and it’s too easy to make mistakes.

The Sony Ericsson F305 White actually uses the 2 megapixel camera on the rear of the phone to orientate itself to calculate the phone movements (like the PlayStation’s EyeToy). there are around 60 games to choose from, some pre-installed some require downloading. Including puzzle games. shoot em up games, sports (ten pin bowling, horse racing, fishing etc) and even a Sims 2 game (although much watered down for mobile version). The Sony Ericsson F305 White ships with memory card, a wrist strap lanyard for gaming, alternative battery covers and headphones. Unfortunately there is no USB cable included in bundle which means you have to purchase separately or use the built-in Bluetooth functionality.

The built-in camera on the The Sony Ericsson F305 is pretty basic with no flash or auto-focus, however the F305 supports a decent range of music formats such as MP3, AAC, WMA and WAV and the video player supports MP4 and 3GP video files. Battery life is good with 8 hours talk/gaming time and up to 400 hours on standby.

Pros:
Long battery life
Bluetooth with A2DP
Expandable memory (M2 card)
Light weight
MP3 player

Cons:
Motion sensor isn’t as responsive as it could be
Spongy and ill defined keypad
basic camera
No 3.5mm earphone jack so limited choice of headphones
USB to PC cable not included

The Sony Ericsson F305 White is a fairly basic mid-range mobile phone with some unique gaming abilities. However it is certainly not the PSP gaming phone reported by the media. Basic phone functions are fine, it’s just that the F305 does not have a lot to offer over many competitors in the market right now. However, in a phone with the emphasis on fun and entertainment the F305 fails to deliver.

The Tocco was one of Samsung’s top selling mobile phones in 2008, and by taking the decision to upgrade to this latest model, the Samsung Tocco Ultra Edition, Samsung are obviously looking to build on their success. There really is little negative to say about this handset. It does everything well, some things brilliantly, nothing badly, and really the lack of standard 3.5mm jack is the only bad point worthy of mention. Lack of Wi-Fi LAN is not the big problem it can be on other phones, with the Samsung Tocco Ultra Edition offering high speed data access at up to 7.2 Mbps (HSDPA). Watch out for this one!

Samsung B2700 Bound Mobile Phone Review

Category : Mobile Phones, Samsung

This is the latest “ruggedised” type of mobile to hit the market place following in the footsteps of the amazing Sonim XP3 Enduro. The Samsung B2700 Bound is offered as a toughened handset specifically for those with outdoors or active lifestyles. With toughened plastic bodywork that is water and dust resistant to the ICE IP54 standard (IP stands for Ingress Protection, the 5 corresponds to “Limited protection against dust ingress” and the 4 corresponds to “Protected against water sprayed from any direction. Limited ingress permitted” according to the International Electrotechnical Commission).

Compare Samsung B2700 Bound Mobile Deals

As you can see from number ratings above, this rating doesn’t mean protection from heavy duty damage or total submersion, but it does offer much more protection against the elements than a conventional handset. In addition to the “beefed up” protection features the Samsung B2700 Bound also offers some useful gadgets for outdoor types such as a compass, an altimeter, a pedometer and a torch. it should be noted that this handset is water resistant and shock resistant as opposed to being waterproof and smash proof (this is not an industrial strength phone in the way a Sonim JCB phone is).

In terms of looks the phone certainly looks durable and the protective sealing and moulded rubber-feel casing gives a rugged and substantial look. Measuring 115 x 52 x 18mm and weighing 115g this is not a super slim lightweight handset, but then it’s not supposed to be. Big no nonsense buttons complete the picture enabling user to make calls with heavy gloves on. Available in black with grey edging, black with blue edging or blue with black trim are available.

Battery life and call performance are good with clear reliable reception and over 10 hours talktime (or 480 hours standby) from a single charge – perfect for long camping trips!

The Samsung B2700 Bound features a fairly basic 2-megapixel camera on the back panel dedicated side camera button but no no autofocus or flash. The camera does have video capabilities shooting 176×144 pixels resolution at 15 frames per second, so the quality is not great. Especially when viewed on the rather modest 1.9 inch, 262k colour screen with 176×220 pixels resolution. A second front-facing camera is provided for video calling.

The Samsung B2700 Bound does have a great music player however, supporting MP3, AAC, AAC+  and WMA formats and Bluetooth wireless transfer is also supported as is FM radio reception. With 26Mb of memory on board the storage is limited but this can be expanded with a MicroSD memory card up to 8Gb (because the Samsung B2700 Bound is water sealed the MicroSD is fitted under battery inside water sealed cover).

The optimised “3″ version of the Samsung B2700 Bound features Google Maps as well as the usual Google search and mail applications and an RSS reader.

Pros
Rugged and well protected
Long battery life
Good music player

Cons
No standard 3.5mm headphone socket
No Wi-Fi
Basic camera
Low screen resolution

Inevitably, any LG Arena review will at some point compare this handset to the Apple iPhone, after all they are both touchscreen multimedia smartphones. In terms of features the LG Arena wipes the floor with the iPhone, featuring MMS, FM radio, a landscape Qwerty keypad and many other capabilities missing from the iPhone.

To do any LG Arena review justice, you have to elaborate on the 5 megapixel camera, the music player and the internet browsing capabilities. The LG Arena is a true multimedia device with a huge feature set.

The LG KM900 Arena is equipped with a five megapixel digital camera with flash and autofocus which allows still picture capture as well as video capture with near DVD quality. Video playback in all the popular video formats such as DivX and MPEG4 is superb on that huge screen. There is a second camera with a lens on front of the handset for two way video calling.

The LG Arena comes has an integrated music/multimedia player with extensive music features such as MP3 and AAC format music playback, FM radio and Java games. With a good range of connectivity options including 3G HSDPA technology, Bluetooth, GPRS and EDGE, Wi-Fi and USB, there should never be any problems connecting to compatible devices.

The integrated WAP browser allows full internet access and web sites can be viewed in XHTML and HTML formats. Emails can be created, sent, stored and received easily allowing you to stay in contact with work, friends or family on the move. There is also a built in instant messaging feature, which works just a PC instant messaging service such as MSN messenger or ICQ.

To make full use of this phones capabilities, the LG Arena comes with 8Mb of internal memory with a MicroSD memory card slot which can be used to expand the memory up to 16Gb.

Apple Iphone Mobile Phone Review

Category : Apple, Mobile Phones

Unless you have been living under a rock for the last year or so you will be familiar with the iPhone from Apple – but does the iPhone live up to the hype? Let’s find out by doing a full iPhone review.

Well, no iPhone review would be complete without mentioning the appearance, first impressions are important and the Iphone impresses immediately with its large clear screen and uncluttered appearance with just a home button and earpiece visible on the front on the phone. On the top of the phone you have the power button, 3.5mm headphone jack (which is not compatible with many types of headphones as the socket has an unusually deep recess) and sim card slot (to remove sim card you need a paperclip or tsmall screwdriver to insert into a tiny hole as opposed to a simple release button!) The left hand side of the unit features the silencer switch and volume controls and all you can see on the back is the camera lens. This is a super sexy mobile phone which has spurned many lookalikes from competitors. Measuring 115mm x 61mm x 11.6mm and weighing in at just 135 grams, the iPhone manages somehow to be sleek and substantial at the same time.

One thing you will find in common with any iPhone review is that using the iPhone is a joy, all applications open with the touch of a finger on that classy touch-sensitive 320 x 480 pixel screen interface,, which will be familiar to all Apple mac users as it’s based on the Apple OS X design. This mobile is really many devices rolled into one – a widescreen iPod, mobile phone and internet communications device all wrapped up in a sleek, modern package.

The iPhone ships with either 4 Gbyte or 8 Gbyte of memory. Unusually, this smartphone comes with a sealed fitted battery which allows up to 16 hours use as a music player and 5 hours of call or internet browsing time.

The built in music player is awesome, with touch screen music controls to play, pause, rewind & fast forward music while viewing album cover artwork on the screen. Finding your favourite tracks is easy with a search facility allowing search by song, album, artist or play list. I think you will struggle to find an iPhone review that does not praise the music capabilities of this smartphone.

Slick camera and video features are provided allowing easy capture of still photographs and moving video footage. The camera itself lacks many of configuration options seen on other phones but the advanced photo management application provides everything you need to get a near perfect finish. Video playback is supported in all popular formats with touch screen video controls for play, pause, chapter fast forward, chapter rewind and volume. You can even watch your favourite TV shows and movies on the move!

Another stylish and classy phone design from Samsung, the S7330 Black is a slide mobile phone ( Samsung seem to be market leaders in slide design) which looks very attractive with a 2.2 inch, 240 x 320 pixels, 16 million colours display. Sunlight legibility is particularly good even on the brightest of days. A cool feature on Samsung phones is the “active standby screen” (used to be called uGo), basically the screen displays an image of a local landmark where ever you happen to be in the world – Ok not exactly useful but cool never the less! Under the clear and bright display you find a smooth touch navigation panel allowing you to move easily through the menus and features. The Samsung S7330 measures a svelte 104.8mm x 49.4mm x 14mm and weighs just 110g. With a huge seven hours of talk time and 350 hours of standby the battery performance is class leading.

A built in 3 mega-pixel camera function with advanced imaging features including flash, auto focus and face Detection means the S7330 Black offers clear and striking photography. A video recording feature is also available with playback in MPEG, WMV and H.263 modes. A smaller second camera enables video calling.

Internet surfing with the S7330 Black is straightforward with WAP 2.0 XHTML and HTML web browsing and high speed transfer rates are available with 3G HSDPA, GPRS and the EDGE technologies. in music player playing AAC, eAAC+, MP3 and WMA files. With an FM Radio (with RDS) if you get bored or run out of tracks. There is 35Mb of internal memory on board expandable with microSD memory card slot. With SMS, MMS, email and predictive text there is no reason to be out of touch with your friends or family.

The standard pack of Samsung applications and pre-loaded games are included, with useful utilities such as alarm, clock, calculator and calendar.

Pros
3G with HSDPA
Quad-band
Bluetooth v2.0 with A2DP support
FM radio with RDS
Smart dialling feature

Cons
No Wi-Fi LAN support
No HCSCD
No Infrared port
LED flash gives poor performance in low light conditions
Expensive
When operating slide you cant help getting thumbprint smudge on the screen

The S7330 Black is yet another smart and stylish mobile phone from Samsung. A decent camera and a host of standard features make the Samsung S7330 Black a good choice but not a great one, with the lack of Wi-Fi being a particular disappointment.
