The Sony Ericsson Spiro Review

Category : Mobile Phones, Sony Ericsson

The Sony Ericsson Spiro is a compact slider handset that’s part of the Walkman family so its all about the music! Measuring a svelte 92mm x 48mm x 17mm with a weight of just 90g. The 2.2 inch screen is a QVGA TFT type with navigation and call keys situated below. The main keys double up as music control keys when using in music player mode.

The Walkman 4.0 music player is easy to use with a well laid out and easily navigated menu screen. Music options are presented in a variety of ways, and can be sorted by genre, artist or album. The music player also supports album art integration and a variety of playlist settings. The 5Mb of on-board memory is a bit lacking for a mobile device targeted towards music playing, however, this can easily be upgraded to 16Gb using microSD card in slot provided. Inclusion of a standard 3.5mm jack is good news as you can source or use your own favourite after market headphones (you can even use a wireless headset as Bluetooth 2.1 is available). All the main music file formats are supported (MP3, AAC, eAAC+ and WAV). If you run out of music tracks there is also an FM stereo radio with RDS.

A dual band GSM phone, the Sony Ericsson Spiro has limited data connectivity, just GPRS and EDGE. No 3G means downloads of any size can take some time. That being said, browsing the internet with the included Opera Mini browser is perfectly fine with no major delays when accessing popular websites, the Facebook and Twitter apps bundled with the Spiro are pretty seamless too.

Advantages: Quality feel and sturdy construction, good range of connectivity including Social networking capabilities, quality of music playback and FM radio is superb and “TrackID” music recognition feature is extremely useful, industry standard 3.5mm jack provided offers good choice of earphones, opera browser makes good use of the limited data speeds available. Competitive deals and tariffs on contracts from o2, Orange and Vodafone, and some great low price pay-as-you-go offers too.

No Wi-Fi, meagre internal memory, camera merely adequate – bit disappointing when compared to rest of phones features, limited connectivity with no 3G which means downloading large files is not recommended.

A great music player (Walkman) with pretty decent mobile phone capabilities! Walkman phones have a lot to live up to with their history and the Sony Ericsson Spiro certainly delivers. The great music capabilities and low prices should more than make up for the lack of connectivity options.
